It's "nice" that you don't want to have jQuery in Zeusmode... so think of another solution, but just editing the html of the whole content body as string isn't a good idea as it kills data stored within the elements (on click handlers in this example). The script you're providing over here is used as gadget which makes you responsible for keeping it in a good shape and keep it from making problems (especially as this is causing work for others)! People don't recognize where the bug is from... even I needed several minutes to figure out the exact source of the problem. They just assume it's MediaWiki's (or WMF's) fault as it's impossible for them to find the source of such things at their own.
