Het geslacht Diphyllobothrium, waarin de lintworm wordt geplaatst, wordt tot de familie Diphyllobothriidae gerekend. De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1990 door Hatsushika & Shirouzu.
