Het geslacht Collastoma, waarin de platworm wordt geplaatst, wordt tot de familie Umagillidae gerekend. De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1980 door Ponce De Leon & Mane-Garzon.
