Het geslacht Typhlopolycystis, waarin de platworm wordt geplaatst, wordt tot de familie Polycystididae gerekend. De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1975 door Schockaert & Karling.
