In 380 splitsten de [[Thervingi]] en de [[Greutungi]] zich af; vanaf nu spreekt men van de [[Visigoten]] en de [[Ostrogoten]]. De Ostrogoten verplaatsten zich naar [[Pannonië]], waar ze werden verslagen door keizer [[Gratianus]]. De Visigoten verhuisden naar [[Thracië]], waar ze in 382 vrede sloten (maar niet voor lang).
