Regel 939:
== [Coming soon] Growth team features ==

Hello!

Sorry to use English. .

I'm Trizek (WMF). I work as a community relations specialist for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm here to share a message from the Growth team.

As you may already know, the Growth team works on some features. These features help newcomers to make constructive first steps when they join the Wikipedia community. Our goal is to help newcomers when they edit for the first time, and also to increase the retention of new editors. Several wikis already have these features, since a long time now.

More and more Wikipedias are getting these features. We plan to enable these features soon on your Wikipedia. This way your Wikipedia will offer more options for newcomers to make good first edits and become community members. I'm starting this conversation to answer your questions about this deployment.

;Which features?

We have created several features to help newcomers, and also to help community members who help them :

* Newcomer homepage: a new special page, the best place for a newcomer to get started. It includes:
** Newcomer tasks: a feed of task suggestions that help newcomers learn to edit. Newcomers have been making productive edits through this feed! Know more about this tool.
** Mentorship module [optional]: each newcomers has a direct link to an experienced user (see below). This way, they can ask questions about editing Wikipedia, less the need to find where to ask for assistance.
** Impact module: the user sees how many pages views articles they edit received.
* Help panel: a platform to provide resources to newcomers while they are editing. If they work on suggested tasks, users are guided step-by-step on the process of editing.
* Welcome Survey: communities can know why newcomers create an account on Wikipedia.

;Where to test the features?
You can go to test.Wikipedia.org, or at one of the Wikipedias where we already deployed the features. There, go in your preferences and turn the features on. We can also enable the features on Nederlandstalige Wikipedia anytime: just ask! It would help a lot your testing.

;Are these features efficient?
The Growth team found evidence of the efficiency of these new features: better retention, higher number of returning users, more edits being made by newcomers.

;How to help?
If you are interested by increasing newcomers' first steps, here are some ways to help.

* You can ask any question you have!
* You can translate the interface (on translatewiki.net). At the moment, half of the interface has been translated.
* You can start a discussion about mentoring. It is not mandatory, but encouraged. Do you think your community would like to have a pool mentors ready to reply to newcomers' questions? We notice at other wikis that questions are really simple. How to coordinate this mentoring/welcoming effort with Wikipedia:Coachingsprogramma?

;What are the next steps?
The next step ou be to enable the features at your wiki, for a trial period. Only experienced users would have access to the features, to test them and check how they can be used in the existing workflows. After a two weeks long trial period, newcomers would get the features. What do you think?

All the best, Trizek (WMF) (overleg) 9 jun 2021 19:16 (CEST)
