Invasive alien species are animals and plants that are introduced accidentally or deliberately into a natural environment where they are not normally found, with serious negative consequences for their new environment.^[1] According to WP:en, "an en:invasive species is a species that is not native to a specific location (an introduced species), and that has a tendency to spread to a degree believed to cause damage to the environment, human economy or human health". The European Commission estimates the damage to the European economy at billions of Euros every year, in addition to the negative effects on native animals and plants. As of 2015 coordinated action has been taken on European level, resulting in the list of Invasive Alien Species of Union concern ("the Union list").^[2] For the 66 species on this list that cause the most damage, member states have to take action in order to prevent, detect, eradicate or manage populations of these species. The Union list is updated regularly.

Project invasive species bewerken

Thinking further on the subject of invasive species, some Wikipedians took the intiative to start a project invasive species to extend and improve the relevant information in the major European languages of Wikipedia. This project page is the first result. Our analysis shows that 75-95% of the species on the Union list has a Wikipedia article in a European language. These articles vary in length and detail, often missing content on the invasive character of the species. For 5-25% of the species there is no article at all in one or more European languages. So there is room for improvement in quality and quantity of information on the subject. We hope you will join us in this effort.

To help you on your way we have provided some background information, links to useful pages and a template for a general structure to write or adapt pages on invasive species. The template is not a prescription but a tool to remind you of subjects that may be relevant. Use it at your own discretion. In addition we provide lists of pages on invasive species that are still missing (red links) or may be improved (blue links). You may use the factsheets from the brochure of the European Commission that are available under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license (or information from authorities in your home country that may be available under a similar license).
