Pieter R. Gurdebeke (Bruges,°1988), geologist (PhD), environmental scientist and natural historian based in Belgium. I work on recent and Holocene estuaries of the northern hemisphere, focussing on micro-organisms such as dinoflagellates and ciliates and using a range of approaches (e.g. assemblage diversity, taxonomy, molecular phylogeny, chemical composition). I have also studied marine and freshwater systems, and I have a broader interest on general ecosystem functioning, macrophytes and invertebrates, especially in the framework of changing environments.

Further interests in the geology, biodiversity and (industrial) history of Belgium.
