'''Jitō;''' 持統天皇, ''Jitō-tennō'';[[645]]-[[22 december]] [[703]]) was keizerin van Japan tussen [[686]] en [[697]].<ref>[[Japanse hof]]: [http://www.kunaicho.go.jp/ryobo/guide/041/index.html 持統天皇 (41)]</ref> Ze was een dochter van keizer [[Tenji]] en getrouwd met keizer [[Tenmu]], die tevens haar oom was, en die ze opvolgde. Ze was de vierde vrouwelijke keizer van Japan.
In 697 trad Jitō af ten gunste van haar kleinzoon [[Monmu]], maar tot aan haar dood bleef ze actief als regentes van de nieuwe keizer. Haar belangrijkste adviseur was [[Fujiwara no Fuhito]].

Jitō's belangrijkste wapenfeit was het Taihōwetboek uit 702. Dit was een [[wetboek]] naar Chinees model, en vormt de basis van het [[ritsuryo]]-systeem. Ook betrok zij de eerste echte hoofdstad van Japan, [[Fujiwara-kyo|Fujiwara]].
