De Engelse wetenschapper, [[fotograaf]] en [[astroloog]] [[John Herschel]] ontdekte dit proces in 1842. Ondanks dat John Herschel misschien wel de ontdekker is van het cyanotypie proces is [[Anna Atkins]]
Het proces gebruikt twee chemicaliën:
