Albireo
Albireo (beta Cygni) is een heldere ster in het sterrenbeeld Zwaan.

De ster staat ook bekend als Albiero. De naam Albireo stamt (hoewel hij met "Al" begint) niet uit het Arabisch, de Arabieren noemden de ster Al Minhar al Dajajah, wat "bek van de hen" betekent.
De ster is met een relatief kleine vergroting al te zien als een dubbelster met sterk contrasterende kleuren van beide sterren: geel en blauw. De schijnbare magnitude van beide componenten is 3,2 en 5,3.
Na studie van de eigenbewegingen van de helderste sterren is te verwachten dat Sirius, de helderste ster, van ons af zal gaan bewegen en schijnbaar zwakker wordt en dat Albireo over vijf miljoen jaar de helderste ster aan de hemel zal zijn.

- Albireo: yellow, blue. One of the finest in the heavens. I have seen the colours beautifully by putting the stars out of focus. Smyth observes that they are actually different, not, as may sometimes be the case, complementary, from mere contrast; an effect which is seen when the bright yellow light of a lamp makes the moon appear blue, and which Schmidt witnessed to a remarkable degree at his observatory on Vesuvius during the great eruption of '55, when the sky was as green as bottle glass, and the full moon a lively green through openings in red clouds of smoke and steam. A similar result may take place with some double stars, but not with all, as is proved by hiding the larger star behind a bar in field. Hence artificial light is misleading in estimating star colours. Huggins finds the spectra of the pair complementary.[1]
Albireo in Burnham's Celestial Handbook bewerken
- Albireo is one of the most beautiful double stars in the sky, considered by many observers to be the finest in the heavens for the small telescope. The brighter star is a golden yellow or "topaz", magnitude 3.09, spectrum K3; the "sapphire" companion is magnitude 5.11, spectrum B8 V. The separation is 34.3", an easy object for the low power telescope. Even a pair of good binoculars, if steadily held will split the pair. Albireo is noted for its superb color contrast, best seen with the eyepiece slightly displaced from the sharpest focus. Miss Agnes Clerke (1905) called the tints "golden and azure", giving perhaps "the most lovely effect of color in the heavens". For the average amateur telescope there is probably no pair so attractive, though the color effect seems to diminish in either very small or very large telescopes, or with too high a magnification. No more than 30X is required on a good 6-inch to show this superb pair as two contrasting jewels suspended against a background of glittering star-dust. The surrounding region is wonderfully rich, and for wide-angle telescopes the star clouds to the northeast are probably unequalled in splendor in the entire heavens.[2]
Nova nabij Albireo bewerken
Op 20 juni 1670 verscheen een nova nabij Albireo, aldus vermeld door de Carthusiaanse monnik Anthelmus van Dijon. Deze nova verdween twee jaren later na tal van afnemende en toenemende helderheden. De locatie van de nova werd door Hind ontdekt in 1852, en bestaat nog steeds als een uiterst zwakke ster van magnitude 10 of 11.[3]
Winter Albireo bewerken
De dubbelster h 3945 in de Grote Hond kreeg de bijnaam Winter Albireo dankzij de contrasterende kleuren van beide componenten in dit stersysteem. h 3945 ziet er door een telescoop uit als een replica van Albireo.
