Someone should mention that they are also famous for the European case law from 1963 that bears their name (van Gend en Loss v. Nederlandse Administratie der Belastingen). In a lanmark case, the Euro Court of Justice stated that by joining the EEC the Member States had renounced part of their national sovereignty, and that in this new international law framework citizens were allowed to go up to court against the state.
