Recording bewerken

Jett Rebel is known for working solo. For this record he once again played all instruments, wrote and produced everything himself. The album was mainly recorded at Rebel's home studio, Orch.Hit Studios (a division Of Gold Foil Studios). Unlike his previous albums, this is the first record that Rebel recorded digitally since 2016. His previous albums were recorded analogously. He says about this in an interview with Music Maker magazine: I now mostly record with Pro Tools again, and that is a conscious choice. It doesn't always do what you want, but I wouldn't want it any other way. If you work with others and remotely, you can't do that with tape. And charging the price of tape to bands isn't fun for those bands, and I'm certainly not one of those snob to claim it sounds better. Tape was more a way of working for me than it was about the sound. With tape I had to make clear choices. From A to B with full takes, without cutting, and punching is not possible even if you work alone. It gave me a new, fresh way of working and I took it to digital.[6] The album was completed in the spring of 2020 and the release was postponed due to the pandemic that broke out at the time. Rebel was halfway through the production of the comeback album of the American duo Hall & Oates in March 2020, when he flew back to the Netherlands. A planned break to continue working on his own album, among other things. I immediately drove to the supermarket to stock up on food for weeks and heard the first reports on the radio about a possible lockdown. Less than 24 hours later there were queues in front of the same supermarket. Without knowing I would have been a day ahead of all the hoarders.[7] With the global pandemic that came over it, the message Rebel wanted to convey only became more urgent. The album represents a call to get together, party, enjoy and make the real world a bit more beautiful with a wink at the approaching end of the world, especially as a big stick, to get closer to each other. and be less distant from each other.[8] Being yourself, no matter who you want to be and whoever you want to love. In this, Rebel lets the message be heard in his music as on his previous albums and addresses topics that require attention such as humanity, equality, anti-racism, gender equality and tolerance. This is the record you play at the party the night before the world ends. And at that party all opinions are represented. So the people who say: let's just party now. But also the people who try to do something about it. Everyone laughs, everyone feels good and dances, but a lid is also secretly opened in their heads, which makes them think: yes, indeed: we do need a little bit of love right now.[9]

Instruments bewerken

Jett Rebel used mostly SGs and Strat guitars for this album, and his favorite guitar: a Gibson ES-330 called Karen (named after Karen Carpenter). Sometimes you can hear a Les Paul pass by on the album. Rebel used a Rickenbacker bass. A black Precision that Dutch artist Henny Vrienten played on a lot. Also used on this album is the bass of Daryl Hall, whom the duo themselves have used a lot on their records. Rebel also used, importantly for the album, a Minimoog, a Rhodes, a Clavinet, a Wurlitzer, a CP-70 and an upright piano. As far as synthesizers go, on the album you hear mostly cheap keyboards that Rebel says nobody wants. Rebel indicates that he has a wall full of cheap sounds. This was a conscious decision to go for the cheap keyboards this time. The drum kit is a composition of two sets: Sonor and Premier. On the album, Rebel used a AEA KU5A mic.[10] Also, Rebel recorded a number of tracks at Hall & Oates' studio in New York,[11] there Rebel accidentally discovered the "iconic instrument", the drum machine Roland CR-78 . [12] A lover of eighties pop, he filled in a number of tracks on the album with the Roland CR-78. I asked, 'Daryl, when you leave later, can I play some music in for myself?'Now on my own album I have a few instruments that breathe pop history to the max, the drum machine that was used on I for example Rebel told NPO Radio 2, music cafe.[12] Songs where you can hear the drum machine back include Baby i,m In Love, Going On A Ride Tonite.

Reception bewerken

In OOR magazine, pop journalist Jan van der Plas wrote about the album: Production tricks with which Jett Rebel distinguishes himself as a fantastic producer, on the level of Todd Rundgren and Roy Thomas Baker in the seventies. That good? Indeed, that good.[15]

De Volkskrant gave the album five stars, Pablo Cabenda wrote: On PAPP, Jett Rebel glides carelessly over the peaks of thirty years of pop music. His songs are bursting with meticulously filed details and sound like classics that you consider older than the artist himself. Jett Rebel embodies the paradox of the brilliant musician who is more imitator than pioneer. A pop polyglot who has mastered the idiom of musical genres between the 1960s and 1990s.[16]

Belgian music site 'Dancing Bears' , pop journalist Rob De Bruijn gave three stars and writes about Pre-Apocalypse Party Playlist : The album starts strong with "Love Right Now" and "Behave", songs that will certainly do well live. They are danceable and in Jett Rebel terms even quite subdued. No wonder they were also the first singles. On "Emma" it seems to be going in the same direction, but then out of nowhere the song takes an unexpected turn, away from the beaten path. We hear cheerful ge-nanana, a Beach Boys-esque harmony and vocals through the vocoder, which sounds wonderfully retro! On "Baby I'm in Love," he hits the gas pedal again quite hard, as if he still has to catch the last train. He saved the best for last. "Kiss That Girl Again" is a musical ode to the Beach Boys. In the song's three-plus minutes, you go through that band's musical history at a rocky speed, only to take us on a ride to the moon and back.[17]
