In thequarrel that follows the Baron is slightly injured, andthe act ends with Sophie ministering to her woundedfianci while secretly planning with Octavian to ridherself of the now unwelcome Baron. The final act shows the sitting room of a tavern,where the Baron has arranged to meet the supposedmaid of the Princess, the disguised Octavian. Thelatter appears in the maids clothes which he hadworn in Act I, and as the Baron is beginning hiswooing he is suddenly confronted by Faninal, who isindignant at the fickleness of his daughters suitor,and sends for the Commissary of Police to arrest him.Octavian doffs his feminine attire and announces him-self as the fiance of Sophie, while the humiliated Baronflees in disgrace.
