"Ickworth Church initially served Ickworth village, although the village no longer exists. The church has had three major restorations since the 18th century, and The Ickworth Church Conservation Trust is about to embark on the fourth. The first restoration was in 1775 by the third Earl of Bristol. The stucco clad tower would have been added then. The first member of the family to be buried in the vault is the third Earl in 1779. He would have installed the vault during the 1775 restoration. The family gallery on the south side above the vault would also have been added at this time. Before the vault was built the family were simply buried in the churchyard.

The second restoration in 1833 was undertaken by the first Marquess of Bristol. The third, in 1911, was undertaken by the fourth marquess. During the 1911 restoration a new timbered roof was put up, and heating was installed. The fourth marquess also installed some of the Flemish glass roundels in the church, some of which date from the fourteenth century. The fifteenth century mural of the Angel of Annunciation by the altar was also discovered by the fourth marquess when he restored the church in 1911. It had been hidden under whitewashed walls.

In 1986 the church commissioners made St Mary’s Ickworth redundant, and the church was bought by John, seventh Marquess of Bristol. In 2006 Frederick, eighth Marquess of Bristol created The Ickworth Church Conservation Trust, and transferred possession of the church to the trust in order to safeguard its ongoing future."
