English: Now separated from the umbilical cord the young continues its unaided journey to the pouch. The total distance covered is about 6 inches and the journey takes about 3 minutes. The young is about ¾ inch long and weighs 0.8 grams. The mother weights about 30,000 times as much as the newborn. Kangaroo research was carried out by CSIRO from the early 1960s to the late 1980s. The process of kangaroo reproduction was revealed for the first time by CSIRO researchers, G B Sharman and J H Calaby, providing a basis for significant research by universities and state departments from the late 1960s.
