English: Russell Square tube station Russell Square is a classic Leslie Green designed underground station from 1906. The construction used the then novel method of a structural steel framework, which was clad in non-loadbearing ox-blood red glazed terracotta blocks. The two storey street level elevation with large semi-circular windows at first floor level is typical of his work. What is extraordinary is that Green was only 28 when he was appointed to design a number of these stations, but sadly he contracted tuberculosis and died in 1908 at the age of only 33, leaving conjecture as to what he might have subsequently achieved.

This station was originally built for the Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway, nowadays the Piccadilly Line, and is one of the few underground stations in central London not to have a connection with another Line.

The main station entrance here is actually in Bernard Street, not Russell Square, which is a minute's walk away.
