Zen is een afstammeling van Mahayana, hoewel het zich ontwikkelde in een tijd waarin over het onderscheid tussen Mahayana / Theravada nog maar net werd nagedacht - er was pas later een duidelijke scheiding tussen de scholen. Het is eigenlijk ontstaan in India en vervolgens verspreid naar China, waar het zich ontwikkelde als Chan-boeddhisme, en vervolgens veel later naar Japan, hoewel Japanse Zen nu is wat de meeste mensen buiten China en Vietnam beschouwen als Zen-boeddhisme.
