Het symbool heeft als [[Unicode]]-codepunt 20AA_[hex]. Het staat al in de Unicodetabel sinds juni 1993, versie 1.1.0. Het teken kan in HTML-bestanden ook worden ingetypt als ₪. Volgens het Hebreeuwse standardtoetsenbord (SI 1452) kan het worden getypt als AltGr-A (het teken ₪ staat op dezelfde toets).

 

== Old Israeli shekel (1980–1985) ==

The [[old Israeli shekel]], "[[Image:Old Sheqel sign.svg|14px]]", in circulation between 1980–1985, had a different symbol, which was officially announced on 18 March 1980.<ref>''[[Reshumot]] - Yalkut Pirsumin'' (Israeli official gazette, collection of miscellaneous announcements), Collection No. 2619, 27 Nisan 5740, 13 April 1980, p. 1423, ISSN 0334-2980 (in Hebrew).</ref> It was a stylized [[Shin (letter)|Shin]] shaped like a cradle (i.e. rounded and opening upward). Before the introduction of the old shekel in 1980, there was no special symbol for the Israeli currency. This symbol appeared on checks issued by Israeli banks between 1980 and 1985. Quoting prices in new shekels started officially on January 1, 1986, and the old shekel checks remaining unused had to be stamped with The New Shekel symbol over the old symbol.
