Judith Butler.

Judith Butler (Cleveland (Ohio), 24 februari 1956) is een Amerikaans filosoof en lesbisch feministe.

Ze is hoogleraar retorica en vergelijkende literatuurwetenschap aan de universiteit Berkeley. Ze geldt als aanhangster van het deconstructivisme.

Ze is bekend geworden met twee boeken over gender (Gender trouble en Bodies that matter) en hoe onze (ideeën en gevoelens over) lichamen geregeerd worden door gender als maatschappij-ordenend principe. Bodies that matter wordt als een bijzonder moeilijk boek gezien[bron?]. De hoofdoorzaak hiervan is volgens Butlers critici haar extreem ondoorzichtige taalgebruik. Zelf beschouwt zij dit taalgebruik als noodzakelijk om uit te drukken wat zij te zeggen heeft. Kernidee is "performativiteit". Gender leer je door te "doen" en door continue herhaling, hetgeen leidt tot inprenting. Hoe dit er ook voor zorgt dat niet alle lichamen en genderexpressies tellen, legt Butler onder verwijzing naar onder meer psychoanalyse grondig uit.
