BeschrijvingStairway to Heaven memorial over stairs where disaster happened. Memorial to the victims of the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster in 1943.jpg
English: In the 1930s work was started to extend the London Underground System, when this work was suspended by the out break of war an Eastward extension to the Central Line was partially completed, and the unfinished first station on the extension, at Bethnal Green was being used as an air raid shelter.
On the night of 3rd March 1943 an alert was sounded, it was either a test or a false alarm, but people rushed to the shelter. A woman fell on the short flight of steps leading down from the street to what would become the booking hall when the station was completed. This caused many people to fall and be crushed at the bottom of the stairs; 173 died, the worst civilian disaster of World War 2.
This memorial was erected a few years ago above those stairs.
