Het geslacht Cylindromacrostomum, waarin de platworm wordt geplaatst, wordt tot de familie Dolichomacrostomidae gerekend. De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1955 door Ax.
