Op 4 februari 2010 kreeg Chelsea toestemming om zich weer te roeren op de transfermarkt. Een verbod op het aantrekken van nieuwe spelers, opgelegd door de FIFA, werd afgewezen door het sporttribunaal CAS. Chelsea had het verbod opgelegd gekregen, nadat het Gael Kakuta was overgenomen van RC Lens, terwijl het 15-jarige talent nog onder contract stond bij de Franse club. Beide clubs werden het uiteindelijk eens dat Kakuta's contract ongeldig was, waarna de sancties tegen Chelsea werden opgeheven. Voor Kakuta dreigde een maandenlange schorsing. Die was opgeschort, net als Chelsea's transferverbod, in afwachting van de CAS-uitspraak.
