Het geslacht Bothriocephalus, waarin de lintworm wordt geplaatst, wordt tot de familie Bothriocephalidae gerekend. De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1934 door Yamaguti.
