English: St Nicholas' Collegiate Church, Galway / Eaglais Choláisteach San Nioclás The mother church of Galway is the largest Irish mediaeval parish church to survive in regular use. Dedicated (as in many other seaports) to the patron saint of seafarers, it was built in 1320 on the site of an older chapel, became collegiate in 1484 (administered by a college of eight priests under the authority of a warden) and further extended in the 16th century. It effectively served as a pro-cathedral in the vast diocese of Tuam. After the Reformation both Catholic and Protestant wardens continued to be elected until their offices were abolished in the 19th century. Today St Nicholas is the only remaining Church of Ireland in the city.
