Lacking worldly goods, andnot familiar with other languages Olshanskynevertheless set out for Italy, and overcame allprofessional difficulties. He made his debut in Eigoletto at Monza, and engagements fromother towns were offered to him, but he de-cided to return to America and complete hisstudies. Presently Mr. Olshansky was invited to singat a musicale at the house of Mrs. B. Guinness,where his excellent diction, perfect phrasing,convincing rendition and his beautiful voice,deeply impressed the audience. Among themwas Mr. P. L. Cottenet, a director of the Metro-politan Opera-House, who at once arranged forOlshansky to sing before Toscanini. EDWARD LANKOW The Boston Opera-House 397 after a romantic career, Olshansky is a memberof an opera company. Massimiliano Kaplick, a baritone, joined theopera company when only twenty-two years ofage. He is a native of Berlin, son of a wealthymerchant, and at the age of nineteen became apupil of the Berlin Eoyal Conservatory, fromwhich he went to Italy. He made his debut asValentine in Faust at Porto Murisio in1910, and sang afterwards in Italy and Ger-many. On January 10, 1912, Vanni Marcoux, aFrench basso, made his American debut asGolaud in Pelleas et Melisande, and cre-ated a favorable impression. M. Marcouxwas born in Turin of French parents, and hisfather became a naturalized Italian citizen.Mr. Marcoux studied at first for the bar andpassed the necessary examinations for admis-sion.
