Het geslacht Australopacifica, waarin de platworm wordt geplaatst, wordt tot de familie Geoplanidae gerekend. De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd, als Pelmatoplana willeyi, voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1903 door Busson.
